Step into Dance 2018 Projects

Summer Half Term 2018: Open Step

In May 2018, we held our second Half Term Project which was for young dancers who participate in the programme through our partnering schools. 17 dancers came together for Open Step, all from different schools, ages and dance backgrounds. Together, the group worked with Guest Creative Director, Tim Casson, with additional support from Rehearsal Lead, Hayleigh Sellors.

The group had a warm up and creative tasks to begin each day of the week-long intensive which led into them learning and developing choreography for a piece which was later performed at Sadler’s Wells in July 2018 in The Wildflower Suite at Step Live: Copy and Paste.

Spring Half Term 2018: Into Dance Making

In February 2018, we held a week-long choreographic intensive at the Royal Academy of Dance, Into Dance Making. 15 Step Company dancers participated in the project to develop their creativity and choreography. Led and supported by Zosia Jo and Emma Houston, the participants were guided through the creative process, exploring different ways of structuring material, using space, and considering the relationship between the dancers and the audience.

Eight pieces were created in total: four duets, one trio and three solos. All were performed in an informal sharing for their friends and family and RAD staff on the final afternoon of Into Dance Making. Several of the pieces were performed at Spring Sharings and Wandsworth Arts Fringe Festival as part of an RAD pop up event. Three duets were redeveloped into a collective site-specific piece which was performed at Sadler’s Wells before the main performance of Step Live: Copy and Paste.
